Why Serum 2
Serum is the de facto wavetable standard. Its visual editor shows the wavetable, modulation and effects at a glance, and no other synth comes close to its third-party preset and tutorial ecosystem, whatever sound you're chasing, someone has already made a Serum patch and a video for it. For getting a polished modern EDM, bass or lead sound fast, it is hard to beat.
Why Phase Plant
Phase Plant (Kilohearts) is a modular synth: you drop in oscillators, filters and the full Kilohearts effects wherever you want, so a patch is built exactly to spec rather than squeezed into a fixed architecture. It scales from a single oscillator to a CPU-hungry monster and folds the whole Kilohearts effect line into the synth, rewarding sound designers who want to construct rather than just tweak. Its preset and tutorial ecosystem is far smaller than Serum's.
The verdict
Both are excellent digital synths, but they reward different workflows. Serum gives you a fixed, well-designed signal path and an enormous head start in presets, you are rarely more than a search away from the sound you want. Phase Plant gives you a blank modular canvas and the full Kilohearts effects rack inside the synth, so you build the architecture itself.
