This is a deliberately short list. Plenty of free synths exist, but these are the ones that hold up against paid instruments feature for feature, so you can pick by the sound you need rather than by price.

The obvious first download for anyone starting synthesis, and reviewers regularly name it the best free synth available. Its free tier ships the complete engine, three spectral-warping wavetable oscillators plus a sampler, and the drag-anything modulation workflow is friendlier than most paid synths. Sound designers like Mr. Bill publish official preset packs for it, and for modern EDM, bass and pad work it leaves very little on the table.

A free, open-source hybrid synthesizer, subtractive, wavetable, FM and additive across dual scenes, with 2800+ patches and 27 effect types. Astonishingly deep for nothing.
The deep option. Open source and community-developed, Surge XT ships a dozen oscillator algorithms from wavetable to FM to physical-modelling strings, dual filters with a huge model list, a full effects rack, and extras like MPE and microtuning that even paid synths rarely match. The interface is denser than Vital's, but tinkerers and sound designers routinely end up preferring it. Black Sun Empire have released their own Surge preset packs.

A free, hyper-accurate emulation of the Yamaha DX7, six-operator FM synthesis with 32 algorithms that even loads original DX7 .sysex patches. The standard free route into classic FM tones.
The FM specialist. Dexed is a faithful open-source recreation of the Yamaha DX7 with the full six-operator engine, and it loads original DX7 patches, which makes it the standard free route to classic electric pianos, glassy bells and metallic FM basses. It is less beginner-friendly than the other two, FM programming always is, but nothing free gets you these sounds more authentically.
Install all three, they are free and they barely overlap. Vital is the modern do-everything synth and the best place to learn; Surge XT is the bottomless toolbox you grow into; Dexed covers the FM territory the other two only approximate.
If you later outgrow them, the usual upgrade paths are Serum 2 from Vital and paid FM or analog-modelling synths from Dexed, but many finished, professional tracks never need the upgrade.
